Bathroom Flooring: Porcelain Tile vs Luxury Vinyl

Illustration of porcelain tile and wood-look vinyl samples beside a bathroom vanity

Choose porcelain tile if you want a tiled finish and accept the joints and installation requirements that come with it. Consider luxury vinyl if you prefer a resilient surface and a product specifically approved for your bathroom conditions. The better purchase is the complete floor system that suits the room, rather than the sample with the most convincing waterproof label.

This comparison concerns the main bathroom floor outside a shower enclosure. Shower floors have different drainage and installation requirements and need a separately specified solution.

Compare the product, then the installation

The Tile Council of North America defines porcelain by a water absorption rate of 0.5% or less. That describes the tile body; it does not establish how every joint, perimeter or layer beneath a finished floor will perform.

For vinyl, Shaw’s installation guidance says to select a product designed for the intended environment and follow its specific instructions. Preparation requirements can affect both the work and the budget.

Decision Porcelain tile Luxury vinyl
Product selection Confirm floor use and suitability for the expected wet conditions. Confirm bathroom use for the exact collection and installation method.
Appearance Choose tile dimensions, layout and grout together. Compare board or tile pattern, edge detail and repeat frequency.
Preparation Request a specification for the existing floor and supporting layers. Request the permitted flatness, moisture and existing-floor conditions.
Ongoing care Read cleaning instructions for both tile and grout. Read permitted cleaners and restrictions for that finish.
Future repairs Ask how a damaged piece would be replaced. Ask whether a damaged piece can be replaced with the chosen construction.

Test what daily use will feel like

Bring home samples and view them beside your vanity, wall finish and towels. Check them during the day and under your evening lighting. A floor that looks calm in a bright showroom can look quite different in a small bathroom.

Pay attention to surface texture, visible marks and the contrast between adjacent pieces. Ask the supplier for the documented suitability of your exact finish. Daltile explains that slip-resistance test results help compare performance, but do not guarantee that slipping cannot occur.

For another visual direction, see our article on concrete-effect tiles. Use the appearance as inspiration, then check the current product specification.

A small-bathroom example

Illustrative planning example: a bathroom measures 2.4 by 1.8 metres, giving a rectangular area of 4.32 square metres. That calculation is a starting point, not an order quantity. Layout, cuts, fixed fittings and the supplier’s recommended allowance still need to be considered.

Request two quotes against the same written scope: existing floor assessment, removal where required, preparation, flooring, edges, transitions, work around fittings and waste disposal. If one quote includes preparation and the other excludes it, their totals do not yet provide a fair comparison.

Ask each installer to identify what could change after the old floor is exposed. This is more useful than choosing a material from an unsupported estimate of its lifespan.

Mistakes that make comparisons unreliable

  • Comparing material-only prices with fully installed quotes.
  • Assuming every product sold as waterproof is suitable for every bathroom application.
  • Choosing a finish from a photograph without checking the exact product.
  • Ignoring the height of the finished floor at the doorway.

Before ordering

  • Confirm the product code and intended area of use.
  • Get preparation and installation requirements in writing.
  • Approve the layout, edges and transition details.
  • Keep the care instructions and discuss spare material.

Questions before choosing

Can luxury vinyl go over the existing bathroom floor?

Sometimes, but existing flooring is not automatically an acceptable base. The exact product instructions and an assessment of condition, flatness and moisture must support that approach.

Does porcelain tile mean the whole bathroom floor is waterproof?

No. The tile’s low absorption is one product characteristic. Ask the installer to explain the complete assembly and how vulnerable joints and edges are addressed.
