Where does Tadelakt come from? (Origin and history)
Originally from the Marrakech region in Morocco, Tadelakt is a natural -based natural plaster, both decorative and waterproof. An exquisite and natural combination of pure functionality and unchanged style.
Used in the restoration of Riad throughout the country, Tadelakt’s lime was extracted for the first time from the Marrakech plateau in the mountains of the high atlas. This smooth and seamless finish that associates with the architecture of souk, palaces and riads of North Africa, is Tadelakt. Traditionally seen in a deep red ocher, Tadelakt is available in many colors: see our beautiful color card for greater inspiration.
The word itself means “rubbing” or “massage” when it is translated from its original Arabic تدči and its creation and its application remains today faithful to its centuries -old roots, transmitted by Moroccan masters over the centuries. It was truly under the Berber domain of the 11th century that the artisans began to use the Tadelakt method, first to waterproof the real tanks. The use of lime combustion for plaster dates back to a thousand years of age. These innovative Egyptians used plaster and lime plaster to build their pyramids 5000 years ago …..
By exploiting its immense natural properties with expert and precise application methods, Tadelakt has been quickly used for decorative purposes in the construction everywhere in Marrakech and beyond: in the external facades, in small containers to drink and in Hammam (bathrooms). It is therefore not surprising that today Tadelakt becomes a popular and elegant alternative to the tile in the bathrooms, kitchens and bathrooms, as well as for the spa and whole swimming pools. Having said that, it is such a versatile material that it is suitable for almost all internal or external walls.
The natural soap based on olive used to seal the Tadelakt finish is a fabulous product sold for kilo pasta in the marrakech souk. It vanishes in the water and penetrates deeply into the plaster when it is slowly rubbed, rather than leaving a cerful coating as you would expect. The alkalinity of the lime reacts with soap to form a soap foam that is very resistant to water – and harder of the hardened lime – while remaining porous and breathable.
